Google launched Panda Algorithm for new search engine ranking in February 2011 which affected million of website search engine ranking as well as traffic.
Google’s Panda algorithm is put in place to prevent sites with poor quality content from working their way into Google’s top search results. Google’s Panda algorithm is written by Navneet Panda. So, Google name that algorithm Panda.

Google Panda algorithm patent application was filed on September 28, 2012, well after Panda was released into the Google search ranking algorithm.  On March 25, 2014, it was granted by the U.S. Patent Office.

Google releases Panda updates many times latest release on May 20, 2014 known as Panda 4.0.

The purpose of the update was just to keep those low quality and low content sites away from the top ranking result and give the actual quality sites their due.

It affects those site with huge amount of advertising, or those with low quality content affected worse and lead to decline in the ranking.

The Basic Idea of Google Panda is to penalize those website of low quality and those with low quality content.

How it works
Google Panda is a filter that prevents low quantity sites and pages from ranking well in search engine result page(SERP). Its affect the ranking of an entire site or specific section rather than just the individual pages on a site.

Effect of Panda

Website that have been hit by panda need to work on brand awareness and social media networks in a new campaign.

Step To Recover From Google Panda?

Google panda algorithm is basically an on-page problem, so main changes need to be on the website. It need to check for pages with no or little content, as well as for plagiarism.

To recover from Google Panda makes changes according to following factor:

1. Check Low Quality Content
As main target of Google Panda is low quality content of website so first separate it from website. To achieve this also block the indexing and crawling of all low quality content to prevent lowering of site ranking.

To know whether your site content is low quality or not, here are some helpful questions asked by Google Webmaster Central Blog to aid you in determining the low quality content:

  • Does the site have duplicate, overlapping, or redundant articles on the same or similar topics with slightly different keyword variations?
  • Is the content mass-produced by or outsourced to a large number of creators, or spread across a large network of sites, so that individual pages or sites don’t get as much attention or care?
  • Are the articles short, unsubstantial, or otherwise lacking in helpful specifics?
  • Are the pages produced with great care and attention to detail vs. less attention to detail?
  • Does this article have spelling, stylistic, or factual errors?

Interestingly, identical low quality content is particularly endemic across e-commerce websites. For example, why should a pair of audio cables be described differently in each website and in each page on your website? Theoretically to meet the “unique” content guideline every product should be given an unique description and listing to avoid being marked as “low-quality” content by Panda.

2. Main Focus On Unique Content

Main aim of Google Panda is Unique Content, because today’s scenario stealing of content is too much easy.

3. Advertising Ratio

At present most website display advertisement, Many site use too much advertisement in single page. Google Panda keep watch on Advertising Ration which improve user experience.

4. Track Panda Updates

Many website hit by Panda will show massive changes in traffic especially the page views. When using Google Analytics you will see fall in traffic, that’s the possible sign of Panda.
If you’re unfortunately the victim of the Panda, you can:

  1. Implement the changes suggested above.
  2. Ask Google to restore your rankings.
